I've tried changing the suggested configuration. It helps a little, but not enough. I'm really intrigued by the game, and I was going to just bite the bullet and play through the bad performance, but after it made my computer crash completely, I decided it's just not worth it. I'm saying this having gotten this on sale for under 5 dollars.. A fun, classic 4x experience. Customize your race, research tech, expand your empire, conquer the galaxy. Detailed ship design and a very large variety of unit types and roles add to the nuances of your empire building. The graphics are dated, but the underlying game is very solid. Well worth picking up for any fan of the genre or the franchise.. Obtuse, over complicated, hard to learn impossible to master, the vanilla AI is crap, FPS dips on a modern high end 20xx system, it's a pain to setup and did I mention the "official manual" has 298 pages that help jack squat?Yet this is a no-brainer:HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for all 4X enthusiasts. Don't touch it with a 10 foot pole if you're not willing to waste some 20+ hours getting the hang of it.Space Empires IV might be the better game of the two, but it just lacks... something; some 'savor a faire' that I can only find in SEV.No other game I know checks all the boxes as well as SEV does: diplomacy, space combat tactics (with fleet formation that REALLY REALLY matters), intergalactic intelligence warfare (CIA goes to space)It's been what, twelve years since this game was released (holy shirt!), and to this day I haven't enjoyed a Space 4X this much.THE MICROMANAGEMENT IS NOT OVERWHELMING and it's actually fun?!?!It's like $1 when in a promo.IT'S DWARF FORTRESS ON SPACE!!1! (I jest). This game is incredibly complex -- in a good way, except for the fact that its just too complex for the AI to get a decent grasp on. It's also made to be modded, and frankly, is really best played with the "Balance Mod", which basically turns it into a game of Space Empires IV, with cooler graphics. The default game is unbalanced to the point of being effectively broken -- find, and install the Balance Mod, if you get the game.Due to the complexity of the game, single player is kind of easy, unless you give the AI outrageous bonuses to production, etc. The AI just can't manage the game as well as a player can (although the Balance Mod AI is certainly superior the the default AI).Multiplayer, via PBEM, is the ultimate MP space conquest experience. I'm not kidding. There is NO equal. I have played just about every space conquest game in existance, and NOTHING beats SE4/SE5 when it comes to mutliplayer. I say Play-by-Email (or cloud drive, these days, is an amazing option), because you want people to spend 15-30min on their turn, and run the turns simultaneously, to really get the best experience.Space Empires is, and always has been, the computer equivalent of a board game called "Starfire: Empires" (or "Starfire: New Empires", for the second edition). This game was/is outstanding, if you're into epic galactic conquest with your friends. Space Empires IV/V do not disappoint, if you are willing to muscle through the poor UI design issues that give the game its steep learning curve. The fleet AI interface is particularly well hidden, and tough to grasp, but the nuances of the game, particularly of the tech tree, are unending -- and worth the time.. Ok, I've got over 100+ hours. I know the how and the whys of this game. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME!!! The mouse controls need a lot more work. Key board controls are much more simple, but you have to learn them and they are not done with any intelligence. There are countless bugs, lock-ups, and total frustration. If some player wants to do an action let it go to the action, but a back button!! asking "are you sure" for every thing is crazy. Just like this game. I want my money back!. Do not buy this game. I thought it was going to be like Stars! and it might be. However, this game is virtually unplayable on my computer (Win10 64, i5-7300HQ 2.5Ghz, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050) at native screen resolution. The frame rate drops to 5fps when you go two levels deep on a window. It seems to be a known problem. There are many posts about it and I tried many suggestions and spent many hours to get it to an acceptable level without success.. I highly recommend this game to any body who likes good turn based strategy games. This is a fantastic game, by far one of the best 4x games I have ever played. There are mechanics here that you still cannot find in modern 4x games. Multiplayer is local LAN\/Hamachi only however. It goes on sale for the price of a cup of coffee frequently. It's a game worth picking up. SEV does require a decent amount of tweaking to get it to run on a modern Windows computer (Windows 7 and up), When I was starting my multiplayer series, I made a video to help people with their initial setup, optimize it, and fix some common crashes: https:\/\/youtu.be\/mw0o-hADE-I
